Second Sorrowful mystery.

The flogging. (Isaiah 53, 7-12)

“Mistreated, he humbled himself, he did not open his mouth, like the lamb that lets itself be led to the slaughterhouse, as a mute sheep before shearers, he did not open its mouth. By constraint and judgment he was seized. Who among his contemporaries was concerned that he was cut off from the land of the living, that he was struck down for the crime of his people? He was given a sepulcher with the ungodly and his grave is with the rich man, though he did not commit violence and there was no deception in his mouth. Yahweh wanted to crush it with suffering; if he offers his life as a sin offering, he will see offspring, he will prolong his days, and through him the will of Yahweh will be fulfilled. Following the ordeal endured by his soul, he will see the light and will be fulfilled. By his knowledge the righteous, my servant, will justify the multitudes by overwhelming himself with their sins. Therefore he will have his share among the multitudes, and with the mighty he will divide the spoil, because he gave himself up to death and was numbered among the criminals, while he bore the sin of multitudes and interceded for the criminals.
