In Medjugorje, weddings take place at the Church of St. James, the parish church. The spouses exchange their vows, each placing their hands on the cross of Christ in front of the priest to signify that Christ is in the first place in their life.

What does the Catechism of the Catholic Church tell us about the sacrament of marriage? Here are some excerpts:

"1601" The matrimonial alliance, by which a man and a woman constitute between them a community of all the life, ordered by its natural character to the good of the spouses as well as to the generation and the education of the children, was elevated among baptized by Christ the Lord to the dignity of the sacrament "( CIC, can. 1055, § 1)."

“1604 God, who created man out of love, also called him to love, a fundamental and innate vocation of every human being. For man is created in the image and likeness of God (cf. Gen 1, 27) who is himself Love (cf. 1 Jn 4, 8. 16). God having created him man and woman, their mutual love becomes an image of the absolute and unfailing love with which God loves man. He is good, very good, in the eyes of the Creator (cf. Gen 1, 31). And this love which God blesses is destined to be fruitful and to be realized in the common work of the custody of creation: "And God blessed them and he said to them: 'Be fruitful, multiply yourselves, fill the earth and submit -la '"(Gen 1, 28). "

“1605 That man and woman are created for each other, Sacred Scripture affirms:" It is not good that man be alone "(Gn 2:18). The woman, "flesh of her flesh" (cf. Gen 2, 23), his equal, very close to him, is given to him by God as a "help" (cf. Gen 2, 18), thus representing the "God in whom is our help "(cf. Ps 121: 2). "This is why a man will leave his father and his mother and will become attached to his wife, and the two become one flesh" (Gn 2:24). That this signifies an unwavering unity of their two lives, the Lord himself shows by recalling what was, "at the origin", the plan of the Creator (cf. Mt 19: 4): "Thus, they are not no longer two, but one flesh "(Mt 19: 6). "

" Chers enfants, aujourd'hui, je vous appelle à lier votre vie à Dieu le Créateur, car seulement ainsi votre vie aura un sens et vous saisirez que Dieu est amour. Dieu m'envoie vers vous par amour, afin que je puisse vous aider à comprendre que sans Lui, il n'y a ni futur, ni joie, et surtout, il n'y a pas de salut éternel."
